Since 2005, the International Insurers and Reinsurers Division of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner of Puerto Rico, also known as the International Insurance Center (the Center), promotes Puerto Rico as an important member of the international insurance community. Because of its multiple advantages, Puerto Rico serves as a logical gateway for the entry of insurance and reinsurance companies from Latin America, Europe and other international markets.
The Government of Puerto Rico adopted this new initiative and incorporated it as part of its economic agenda for the 21st Century. The International Insurance Center is under the supervision of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner of Puerto Rico. The Department of Economic Development and Trade oversees the promotion of this facility and the extension of tax decrees, explained below.
The experience of jurisdictions close to Puerto Rico has demonstrated that the development of international business centers, such as overseas domiciles, provides viable opportunities for effective and efficient growth for developing economies in pursuit of these goals.
